September 3 – “The Picture on Grandmother’s Wall”

August 29, 2023 by Fawn Smith

This message, delivered by our own John R. Johnson, is inspired by Jean Francois Millet’s painting entitled, “The Man With The Hoe,” which depicts a farmer who is obviously wearied by his work in the field.  Though we do not all labor in the fields, all of us do at times grow weary. Our Sunday morning fellowship is an opportunity for us to offer each other a safe place in which to “knit up the raveled sleeve of care.”

August 13: “A Unitarian Universalist Response to the War in Ukraine.”

August 8, 2023 by Fawn Smith

Join us as our own David Edwards speaks on this timely topic. David, a professor emeritus of the U of A, where he taught Russian History, addresses three questions: (1) What is the Unitarian Universalist Association’s stance on war? (2) What are the causes for the Russian “Special Military Operation?” (3) How might we respond? At the end of the service, we re-dedicate the Peace Pole that has stood in silent vigil for many years on our grounds, serving as an internationally-recognized symbol of a continued hope for peace on earth.

August 6 – “Lúnasa”

August 1, 2023 by Fawn Smith

At the start of August, we celebrate the first harvest of the year as part of the Lúnasa or Lammas festival. The plants of spring have withered and left seeds to ensure future crops. Grains are ready to be harvested and the fruits are ripe for picking. We gather to enjoy nature’s bounty and to give thanks for the food on our tables and for the blessings we have received throughout the year so far.

July 30 – “A Sociologist Looks at Religion”

July 25, 2023 by Fawn Smith

Why do societies have religions, and what is the relationship between the nature of a society and its religious institutions? How has secularization impacted religion?

Our speaker, Jeff Nash, taught at University of Tulsa, Macalester College and he is an emeritus professor of sociology at Missouri State University. He also served as chair of the sociology and anthropology department at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and he has articles and books on a variety of topics from the language and culture of Deafness to studies of everyday life. For the past eight years, he has been co-editor of Journal of Contemporary Ethnography.

July 16 – “Who Was Nelson Hackett?”

July 11, 2023 by Fawn Smith

On Juneteenth 2023, Fayetteville changed the name of a major street from Archibald Yell Boulevard to Nelson Hackett Boulevard. Gene Vinzant tells us more about Hackett, an enslaved man who escaped from captivity in Fayetteville in 1841 and made it all the way to Canada, and why it’s important to remember Nelson Hackett today.

July 9 – “Are You Optimistic or Pessimistic About the Future?”

July 5, 2023 by Fawn Smith

Is the world getting better or worse? Sometimes it’s hard to tell. So should we be optimistic or pessimistic about the future? Maybe there’s another alternative. NWACC Professor Doug Krueger, a beloved regular guest speaker for UUFF, addresses this timely topic.
