African Americans formed the musical genres of blues and jazz in the Deep South around the 1860’s. By the 1910’s, many black artists migrated to Harlem, NY, starting what became known as the “Harlem Renaissance,” which set the stage for the Civil Rights Movement. Jori and Renée highlight the stories and the music of women of color from this era.
