Time: 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Each Sunday morning (NOT happening on 12/24 or 12/31!), adults are invited to join together at 10am in the downstairs common room to discuss a planned topic. Join us!
Topic this Sunday: “How Institutions Change: Two Examples.” This Sunday we welcome Mindful Discussions participant, Jeff Nash, PhD, as our guest presenter. Jeff is a retired Professor of Sociology and we are thrilled to have him share his expertise. Institutions such as the family and the economy change because of stresses and strains brought about by innovations, often technological, financial, or from competition. These stresses and strains may create a conflict between the “ideal” institution and the “reality” of how that institution operates. A model of how institutions cope with tension suggests that two processes take place. First, norms of evasion develop that allow the ideal to persist and the real to operate. The other is a “drive toward consistency” between the ideal and the real. I will describe the adaptations currently happening for the American family, and in one aspect of the economic world, “the home mortgage.” We can talk about norms of evasion and identify some of them that are important to understanding changes in today’s social institutions.
