Each Sunday morning (except during summer break in July and August), adults are invited to join together at 10am in the downstairs common room to discuss a planned topic. Join us!
Topic this Sunday: “Understanding the “Free Exercise of Religion” section of the First Amendment.” The First Amendment prevents the government from restricting the “free exercise of religion”. A key issue concerns the meaning of the protected “exercise” of religion: does it encompass only the belief and profession of a religion, or does it also protect conduct that stems from religious tenets or motivations; for example, wearing a head covering or religious garb, or refusing to accept blood transfusions or other medical treatment? Interpretations of the free exercise clause have varied over the years. We will discuss how the courts have handled the issue. We are delighted to welcome Mindful Discussions participant, Mort Gitelman, as our guest presenter this week. Mort is a Distinguished Professor of Law Emeritus, University of Arkansas. Join us!
