Make a new friend today!
Elder-Kids Connect is an intergenerational pen pal program of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Fayetteville. Using good old-fashioned snail mail (or email), UUFF will connect kids (18 and younger) and seniors in friendship.
Friendships between young and old are often a beautiful gift to both — full of both play and wisdom! In this time of social distancing, these new friendships will provide a wonderful opportunity for intergenerational connection and growth.
Who can participate?
Elder-Kids Connect is for UUFF members and friends ages 5-18 years old and 60+ years old. (If you are younger than 60, but consider yourself an “elder” you are welcome to apply, too!) After signing up, you will receive an email from us when you’ve been assigned a Pen Pal. We make matches quarterly.
How often will I communicate with my Pen Pal?
We encourage connecting at least once a month, but you and your Pal can write back and forth as often as you like! If you aren’t hearing back from your Pal, please let us know so that we can check in and make sure they want to participate.
What should I write?
Pen Pals can write quick notes or longer letters, or include drawings. Tell your Pal about yourself, and ask questions about them. Write about books or music you love, cool science facts, or big ideas like love, justice, and peace. When you join, we’ll share with you some “getting started” suggestions.
What if my Pen Pal is too little to read my letter?
That’s okay. Younger Pals can have a parent or guardian help them read your note.
Is it safe for my child to begin a friendship with an older person?
We expect all participants to abide by our safety guidelines, and we will be checking in with participants quarterly to make sure everything is going well. In the unlikely event that you become concerned about the friendship, please let us know.
Can I call or visit my Pen Pal in person?
No, not yet please. This program will use snail mail / email only for now. When it’s safe to gather again, we look forward to a future Pen Pal Meetup at the Fellowship!
